Description:
A discussion of the benefits and challenges that should be weighed as clients decide whether or not to create trusts as part of their estate planning. This presentation will discuss various types of trusts, why they are used, how they work, and who should be in charge. The presentation will cover the tax aspects of revocable and irrevocable trusts and the administration of each during the lifetime of the creator and after death. The discussion will also focus on how to choose the appropriate trustee. This presentation will be 1 hour, with about 10 minutes for questions afterwards.

Biography:
Julie S. Pleshivoy is a partner of the firm who focuses her practice on estate and tax planning for individuals and closely held businesses. She assists clients in developing and implementing their estate plans addressing issues including estate and gift tax, wealth transfer and asset protection issues. Her knowledge of both estate tax planning and income tax planning provides Julie with a unique perspective in advising clients on the structuring of business ventures and transactions that includes advising business owners and families on business succession matters. She also assists clients with charitable and retirement planning, probate estate administration matters and post-mortem tax planning. Julie has experience in family office administration as well.
Julie is a board member of the Chicago Estate Planning Council and co-chairs the Public Outreach and Young Members Committees, 2014-2015). Julie is also a member of the Greater North Shore Estate Planning Council, the Illinois State Bar Association and Chicago Bar Association. Julie serves on the Professional Advisory Committee for the Hadley School for the Blind and for the Jewish United Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. She is a frequent speaker and has written extensively on estate planning and tax issues and is the co-author of Estate Planning For Illinois Attorneys: The Basics and Beyond 2012 edition by IICLE®, Chapter 6 Income Tax Aspects of Estate Planning. She is also a frequent speaker for the National Business Institute, Inc. and the Chicago Estate Planning Council on the topics of estate planning and probate administration.
Julie received her J.D. with Honors and an LL.M., in Taxation, with High Honors from Chicago-Kent College of Law. She graduated from the University of Chicago with an A.B. in Political Science.
Julie has been recognized as an Illinois Super Lawyers Rising Star - Estate Planning & Probate, Closely-Held Business, Tax (2011 through 2015). Prior to entering the practice of law, Julie worked as a broker with an investment research and management company.
